I’m not saying he doesn’t need one, I’m saying why do we put so much pressure for him to have one when there’s hardly even a whisper towards Matthew owning up to his own horrible decisions. People just be like “poor baby oh my” and all that when he needs to take responsibility for his own actions. He doesn’t and hides behind pinning Alastair as responsible an hiding behind his drink as a way to get out of it. He heard the rumor about his mother once and then went off and decided to interrogate his mother using a magic potion behind her back. Yes, for the time period, when a rumor about a “loose woman” goes around people jumped to believe it since woman were believed to be one small step away from promiscuity, but come on. Everyone just seems to forget that his own actions caused the consequences, and the fact that he said some horrid things with malicious intent to Alastair directly led to the situation.

The fact that hardly anyone calls for him to have a redemption arc where he owns up to his own issues meanwhile it’s basically expected that Alastair grovel and beg for forgiveness is really unfair and frankly representative of the fact that people like to excuse when the white boys do something bad but absolutely shred women and poc when they do something bad as well. It’s happened so many times at this point we should know better.

I like Matthew, and I like Alastair. I actually like them more than James and Cordelia. They’re both extremely interesting characters, but they have both said and done awful things that need apologizing for. 

Did you seriously just say that Alastair was racist towards James? James, a white person? Yeah, he’s part demon, but that’s not the same as all! You’re talking about Alastair being “racist” when Matthew is one if the most racist characters in tlh? Did you just conviently forget Matthew’s bullying?

And do you remember Will calling women whores and just generally being sexist?

Alastair didn’t get James kicked out of school, he didn’t even start the prank that lead to James leaving.

You’re being completely hypocritical and racist when you hold Alastair to a much higher standard then Matthew and Will.

For real, I almost mentioned Will literally prompting Tessa to sleep with him because she’s a warlock and “can’t have kids” so it’ll be fine. She got seriously (and reasonably) pissed at him and he never once apologized for it. He also got punched in the face by Jem for going to a drug den because he was sad uwu, but everyone seemingly forgets that happened too.

I wanted to be somewhat fair with the racism accusation against Alastair so I didn’t say anything before but let’s be real here: you simply can’t compare the fantasy racism against James to real racism against Alastair. James is a white kid who got to go home to a loving family, and if he walked around in the streets of London he’d be absolutely hunky-dory. Alastair, who basically functions as the head of the house because of his alcoholic father, wouldn’t be able to walk the streets of the entirety of Europe and half of North America without getting odd looks or racist comments. James has a much easier time finding his pocket in society, and even gets fawned over by all of the eligible girls in London (as seen in CHoG), meanwhile Alastair and Cordelia are constantly counted as the odd ones out and worry about how people view them simply because they’re so visibly different from most of the pasty Londonites.

I didn’t read most of the Shadow Market stories but I did read CHoG and see the synopsis and frankly what Matthew has said and done is leagues worse than what Alastair has done. Matthew, however, is shirking responsibility and villainizing Alastair further (why not villainize the one who started the rumor? sus) and acting like what Alastair has done is so unforgivable his own sister would stop loving him. And people are like “MATTHEW BB IM SO SORRY”. Like come onnnnnnn.
